The 100th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

Flowers blooming, birds singing, and warmer weather are only a few of the things to look forward to in the United States as spring begins. Spring is also a time of festivals and celebrations in America. The nation’s capital, Washington DC, is home to one the most popular spring events: The Cherry Blossom Festival. This nationally recognized festival is a commemoration of life, beauty, and the relationship between the United States and Japan.

In the year 1912, the Japanese government graciously gave 3,000 cherry trees to Washington DC. Even though few more than 100 of the original 3,000 trees survive today, each spring the city comes alive with these beautiful pink cherry blossoms and the countless offspring they have created. Typically the festival lasts for two weeks, but this year, on the special 100th anniversary, the festival extends from March 20th to April 27th.

These five event-filled weeks present numerous opportunities for visitors to familiarize themselves with Japanese culture – from trying on kimonos to making Japanese crafts to Haiku and meditation workshops. In addition to workshops, the festival features several exhibitions and lectures related to Japanese art and music, samurai warriors, and Buddha. For those who want to enjoy the lovely outdoors, the festival offers paddleboat rides and boat tours in the Tidal Basin, as well as horse carriage rides and bike tours. These provide a perfect opportunity to get a close look at all the beautiful cherry trees that surround the Jefferson memorial other famous monuments of the nation’s capital. Last but not least, visitors are able to enjoy the delicious cuisine. During the festival, several restaurants in Washington DC add cherries to many of their recipes.

The most famous event of the Cherry Blossom Festival is the Opening Ceremony. In honor of the 100th celebration, the ceremony will include performances by famous American and international artists. This will be followed by over 300 additional cultural events throughout the five-week celebration, including the famous Kite Festival and the Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony. Not only does the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival bring people together for memorable performances, events and exhibitions, it emphasizes the importance of multiculturalism in the United States and in the world.
